actually how u define COL. does it include housing?

hmm but either way with or without, i think it's ridiculous.

whether or not it's ok right... let's say u make 4k per mth. i think can cope. but not acceptable because the costs are crazy enough

like slowly boiling frogs

must see everything in tandem to salary and rise in salary. also cannot just look at civil service. even though i feel working for govt or GLC is alr depressing wages enough if u include car and house, compared to say 20, 30 yrs ago when everything including housing and cars are still affordable

now it's not

transport costs alow increase by dunno what 6% or more, but real wages increase by 1-3%?

then the yakun or normal kopitiam also increase by that or more

electricity also going up. only say give vouchers to block for time being

Cost of living... I can handle basic col if I am holding onto my current job.

affordable is subjective leh.

i looked up the definition just in case -

adjective
inexpensive; reasonably priced.
"affordable homes"

if it' includes inexpensive then no. let's say you make 10k per mth. u can eat good stuff every other day. u maybe can afford a bread and butter car if no commitment.

even if let's say u make EDMW's recommended 20k per month. u can afford these and more luxuries but is it really affordable? inflation, price gouging and unscrupulous profiteering have made many things cost more in sg. and the same amount of pay now compared to many years ago means u cant really afford them.

tbh i think it even affects people who make 20k per mth. maybe 50k per mth then u dont feel so much of it. but, dont forget, if u include house or car, then even if u make 50k per mth i think u will feel it. coz u want a bigger condo or landed. or a better car. but these already cost like many times what they were since not long ago

maybe u can buy a 3 or 4 or even 5 room if u have savings or spouse or upgrading

u can afford tuition for ur kids, can maybe afford holidays...... but is it affordable? no lor. not in relation to inflation in prices compared to say earning 10k 10, 20, 30 years ago

The current cost of living is very high. The government has to provide subsidies and vouchers to help make things more affordable. If things were already affordable, there wouldn't be a need to raise taxes or give out handouts.

Indeed. Fact that gov had to provided handouts for all citizens means col is getting out of hand

Previously handouts were only given out to those who are eligible (annual income less than 30k or something like that) for it and Iirc that amt to more than 60% of citizens

Even town council are giving voucher to help with cost of living and internal consumption.

There are no solution available or viable solution from the government.

I think it depends.

If everyday eat cai png, look out for deals at supermarket, no cars and not have much social life, it is okay.

But if need to flex, buy Audi, every week go eat at Dempsey Hill, buy condo, wife not working, got 2 children, shop at Cold Storage or Jason's over a measly above average salary then it's suffocating. Like my corlick partner, maybe his salary few hundreds more than me but is the latter. For me no car, still stay with parent i think, low key he also jealous of me. :s13:

On the topic of "OMG KIDS ARE SO EXPENSIVE"
It's all bullshit.
My uncle security guard and wife working at restaurant brought up 2 kids like no issue, every year go holiday 2 times. See them very happy. Stay at 4 room flat.
