For 189 skills visa, you will need to submit your EOI (Express of Interest) into a pool (valid for 2 years), and hope you get selected based on your points scored. Selection used to be the end of every month, but after COVID, seems like the selection is once every 6 months.

You will be ranked on the points scored vs the same people in your job category nia. eg if you are an accountant, you will only fight w/ people who have points as accountants.

How Oz gov selects is by quota. example below

A, B, C, and D all going through 189 skills visa. after collecting their documents and getting their degrees assessed + english test etc etc. they have the following points.

A = teacher with 65 points
B = accountant with 75 points
C = accountant with 80 points
D = doctor with 80 points
E = accountant with 90 points

All 4 submit their documents into the EOI pool

During EOI draw, Oz gov will have a quota for each job category.

For example purposes, lets say 1 teacher, 2 accountants, 1 doctor.

after looking through the pool of people, the results would be as follows

A = teacher with 65 points = Selected
B = accountant with 75 points = Rejected
C = accountant with 80 points = Selected
D = doctor with 80 points = Selected
E = accountant with 90 points = Selected

Even tho B has higher points than A, because B is fighting with a tougher pool of candidates, they might need higher points.

Express of Interest Points Scoring

I will touch on things that you can score extra points

For English language, if you want to score the maximum points (20), focus on Pearsons PTE English exam. Do not try IELTS. you will never score higher than 7.5 for speaking and writing hence you will never get full points.

Translation community credential certification

If you're mandarin good, you can try for this. It's really a translator cert. But the passing rate is around 15%-20%. You will need to study for it.

Currently best way to move there is going via the 189 visa route. The points cut off score for the visa is only 65.

Can use the calculator here to roughly count how many points you might get.
