err.. i think my situation abit different since my wife's family got enough marnee to last 3 generations. my kids dont need worry about needing to be 'scholars'. i encourage them to follow their passion rather than focus on studying, which is what my girls are doing. 1 of them entering a pre professional ballet program overseas after O levels cause she wants to try to be a ballerina.

i said this b4, i'll say it now, if u r average and ur partner is average, just be a DINK. dont bring another mouth into this world to suffer. end up both of u suffer, the kid also suffer.

If pay in full still need 5 yrs. Then usually stretch out to say 20 yrs. U still need to factor in other expenses and if got 1 or 2 kids need a lot of money. From studies extra lessons, play and gadgets etc

I rem last time got mates go oz study medicine need 500k sgd together with costs of living.

If need car and helper even more, holidays even more. Buy additional stuff also need more.

Then save for own retirement. If no inheritance, or earn many money how to survive

200k is like barely cut it.

income, take home pay
Me - $3600 (im on half time this year so only take home 50% salary)
wife - $7000 (she's working remotely for a US coy, 100k/year USD, after tax etc take home about 7k SGD after currency conversion. no CPF.)
hdb rental - $3000
condo rental - $4500
total = 18000 (which is about 200k/year)

Expenses breakdown per month

Daily expenses for me, wife, 2 kids, and 2 parents (food, utilities, internet) - $2000
car (petrol for 2 cars using phv card for discount) - $600
car (road tax x 2 maintenance x 2) then avg out per month) - $300
car (i always zheng/groom my car) - $500
car ERP top up - $200
weekend outings (avg $200 per week) - $800
mobile line x 4 - $40
parking at work - FOC
season parking at my parents place x 2 cars - $180
other rando stuff (see doctor lah, buy rubbish lah) - $500
kids ballet - $500
total aga aga = about 5k ~ 6k /mth

we normally save around 11k~12k/mth

i dont have any car loans because 1 car is 16 years old and fully paid long ago, other car i bought last year was paid in full also. hdb and condo loans paid off liao, but if have to factor both in for expenses, maybe can put aside 3k/mth cash to pay them + using cpf

i stay with my parents cause they getting on w age. but we have our own place that is vacant / we stay there sometimes. its my in law's landed ppty. my in laws living in Oz now, so we stay there to look after the place. never rent out. hard to rent out also, too much of their rubbish in there to clear.

i dont have a maid cause nobody sees the need for one. even my parents dont want a maid. kids dont have major expenses (tuition). we taught them how to learn themselves since young.

so 200k/year i think its possible to get by in SG with decent amount of savings if u dont count holidays, or keep changing cars, or always buying new stuff. for the last 4 years, we've been managing to put aside slightly more than 100k/year in savings. if u need to go holiday, maid, give kids tuition, etc. that 100k will drop to maybe 70k/year liao.

but everyones different lah. my wife's family was a big help when we first bought our hdb and condo (they paid for our DP). also that time ppty prices chip chip. my hdb 200k+, my condo 600k+ and we started our family early early. bloody taboo in SG. lol. always kenna gossip from extended family during CNY.
