Quote from: Philipkee on Dec 08, 2024, 07:53 AMI think most of the people voting PAP into power are true blue sinkies la

It's just easier to blame new citizens/ boomers etc for the votes.

Actually it could be the average young working sinkie voting for PAP

All my frens 9/10 voted oppo
But I excluded foreigners..ppl who r here but didn't serve ns or didn't stay more than 20-30 y
I believe foreigner population has overtaken sg locals

Very hard to say.

It could also be the crowd you mix with.  Or people could also lie.

Cos if you go by online comments, PAP should have been voted out long ago.  It is of cos easy to say it must be new citizens but I kind of doubt it

If you look at the past elections vote shares of PAP even before 2000, it has roughly been the same of 60-70 plus %. I look at since 1991

I always hear excuses like Singapore wasn't so bad then, mybfd, new citizens blah blah but no one wants to say actually maybe the silent majority really support PAP

When Tharman got over 70% of the vote, people also say no la presidential election is not the same as GE

So yea, I believe it's either many of us live in an echo chamber or people just don't share who they actually vote for because imho, it is more socially acceptable to say out that I vote for Oppo than pap.

I still think it's the silent majority of true blue sinkies voting for PAP.  It's just that Oppo supporters make a lot of noise

I remember hearing from someone. 1997.  At Yio Chu Kang stadium.  I heard like 50000 people were chanting WORKERS PARTY.  There was no cooling day then. Everyone thought WP would win some seats.

End up only retained Hougang.  Yes there was some controversy about the cheng san elections but don't forget during then opposition had 4 seats, everyone was screaming support for opposition, voters were all locals and guess what happened?

Don't forget 2001 (post Sept 11 so maybe got effect), 2006 (post Durai and peanuts remark and yet opposition didn't win an extra seat).  Only in 2011 there was a slight change with Aljunied GRC falling to opp hand and it was nearly lost in 2015

So yea, after looking at past election results, I come to the conclusion that the reason for the PAP winning is because of the silent majority.

Obviously the new citizens may also make a difference but I doubt it's a very big difference as in a game changer.  Maybe for those 48/52 cases maybe can argue even though I dunno but those where the opposition got low 40s or 30s, I doubt the new citizens made any difference.  It's more of the quality of the opposition and like it or not, Singaporeans follow brand first then track record

Put a monkey under PAP (brand with no track record) and chances are the monkey will win

For all you know, it's the maid

Encountered many times in the hospital.  This old uncle lives alone with his maid as caregiver.  Family was the one who presumably hired her but they don't live with him

He only speaks Hokkien.  Maid only speaks Burmese.  In my heart, I wonder how they even lived together since they don't even know each other's language

The crowd was real as moi was there, the huge number of votes for heavy weights JBJ, Francis Seow, Tang Liang Hong ...before blackout was real...... Saw police trying to bring Tang just like the military trying to arrest the MPs in Korea. Many got stunned. The next day report by States time so little on the crowd but made the Police arrest big big. Sinkies r cowered. Forget about chiu rights and freedom.

Have chiu heard of the momentarily blackout and new ballot boxes? There chiu hv it. Go google Cheng San.

Keeptrucking

i just hope that if pap ever loses their majority and declares martial law (by cooking up some story about rigged ballots or what not), we will be united enough to stand up to them just like the Koreans.

pap losing majority won't happen in the next two GEs I don't think so. but it will be uncertain after that because of the younger population and foreigners (who might just switch their votes).
