Before  institutions enter their  position, they will carry out a short, push the price down to get to the price they want
Weak hands will panic sell and this will trigger stop losses on the way that's why will see long red bar.
Known as the accumulation period after which there will be a breakout when retails all pile on top of their positions.
Sometimes will have short squeeze when retailers cover their position with buy orders in panic
After a certain period institutions dump take profit
thats how they make money off retailers from the short and cushion below retailers. Manipulation or not hard to detect   
Just trade on the same page as institutions
