Do you need a car in Singapore?

I was discussing this with someone and I said yes

We all need cars in Singapore.  We just don't need them 24/7.  We just need them for certain hours or certain purposes.  Each time we take a Grab or a cab, it shows we need the car.  We just don't need to own one

It's just that in other countries, if you need a car for the long term, even if it's only for a weekly trip to hospital and public transport for the rest of the time, it's cheaper and more convenient to just own the car.  In Singapore, it's the reverse.  If you need the car for the long term but only once in a while, it's cheaper to take grab than to own a car

But bottom line, we all need cars.  The only thing is we don't need to be owning them 24/7.  But some don't like phv or cab cos you can choose the driver and for car rental, you don't know if the car is maintained or not

However I can attest that for families with small kids or many members needed point to point tpt eg elderly who r quite not v mobile
Preggy with one or more kids
Elderly who has to lug more than two day s of groceries
Working parent who has to lug grocery and work bag etc

U can call grab
During peak HR or the time U need grab
Either the price x1.5-2
Or no car accepting yr ride

U can easily wait 1/4-1.5 h and hv zero acceptance for rides esp on festive eg cny or Raya or Christmas or new yr day

If stuff aren't time sensitive it's ok
When U hv small little ones
Or elderly
It's painful to mk them wait more than 1/2 h in standing conditions esp if v old ppl or rushing to hospital or work for someone else
Or sthg that cropped up

In e past elder still can call taxi
Now w apps they don't tk as much phone calls taxi and no much means to wave a taxi on road .. life is quite hard for those without young ppl to help em

I don't need the car v good maintenance or what not
Can sit for 1/3-1 h get to destination like normal can alr
But in our country most of us median or below can't afford it

We rather spend on food or roof
Than on car 🚗
So our time n activities r bounded by where e trains r running n which direction our HSE has connectivity to

Car is invented to provide ease of commuting. Does not matter whether need 24 hours or not.
When it is required, it is there and that is the purpose of having one.

Of course there are alternatives to cars for mode of transportation and same for delivery truck, even though we do not need 24 hours, our company will still procure. Just like hawker centre stalls, they dont operate 24 hours. 

I think you are thinking of full utilisation vs under-utilisation, this is another topic to debate. It is because car is heavily taxed and because it is not affordable for everyone, you are thinking of car sharing....etc. Just like if TV licence is based on bidding and need licence to view and out of range for everyone, surely one will find alternative ways as in olden days, people watch wayang and very rich families has black and white TV.

Hope you do not get confused with utilisation as many things we own are not fully utilised but good to have and car is one of them for my family and many people around the world find it useful and is affordable for family to have at least one car.  If your question is whether car is useful, I will definitely say yes.
