You went to geylang serai too? I was there just now.
We are crowded cos we hv too many foreigners. I think almost half the people you see outside are foreigners. And those who look and even sound like us might even be Malaysians who are new citizens or hv worked here for very long.

Expensive cos it is under PA. And we know who PA is under..cb pap again
Everything must be profit at all cost.
Even a communal event like this. No wonder singapore lacking passion and creativity.
PA could hv easily charged say 5k for rental and ensure that prices are neighbourhood and affordable. So that it can be in the spirit of the festival.
Whole plot of land and space all usually sit empty anyways.

ya. so much the gov can do to let people breathe easier, and enjoy a better life and more balanced lifestyle.
they can for example charge half-rent for people who sell things like hand made handicrafts and art.
instead, they chose to pursue a profit-driven bidding system (I think).end up everyone just sell overpriced fancy food so as to recoup money fastest way possible.

ok, maybe kebab bit expensive if you see how it has gone up. i am not a huge fan so I am not sure. But i think biryani might be a case of it being underpriced last time? given how much effort it goes into making it nice, i think haha.
and tbh i think that our hawker prices previously were a bit on the low side? like $3. $3.50 for mee pok. i think very hard for them to make a decent living without having to work crazy hours.
prices have gone up a lot yes, and too much in some instances. but i think part of it is also due to how cheap some of the meals were previously.
i always think that being a hawker is one of the toughest jobs, on par with a construction worker, might even be worse depending on what you sell.
anyways we have to get used to hawker food that will cost about $5 to $8 soon. sigh.

i dunno also if prices all gone crazy cos of increasing costs or simply taking the chance to do it
one factor is definitely the rental, for awhile i was quite actively looking for a stall so i hook up with lots of pioneer hawkers and i am shocked to realise why they can sell cheap in hawker centres... their rental are in the low 3 digit range, imagine how its not a "burden" to them, include utilities, conservancy, all other miscellaneous, its a comfortable 4 digit operating cost... now? a hawker centre is bidded at $2k to $3k in a normal hawker centre but more than $5k in a popular one... how not to be ex to consumers?

oh ya i remember reading your hawker post on edmw. ya the costs add up. i spoke to the carrot cake hawker at circuit road hawker. he said needs to include utilities and dishwashing costs. so not easy unless you have endless stream of customers like the popular ones.
i see a few of the hawkers there i feel sad. like not much business. but i think the rental there still ok?
actually a bit of a dilemma too. too low rental the hawkers might feel lazy and choose to open/close when they feel like it. can be frustrating. i think better way would be to charge reasonable fees and mandate like a fix four/five day opening days in a week.
end of the day, i guess pap just need to squeeze money from as many sources as possible. which actually started from that cb lao goh. he was the one who wanted every gov agency to be money making.
even tan cheng bok had to fight for sunday free parking for HDB.

i first had the idea when my godma whos an experienced hawker ask me if i wanna start a hawker stall on my own... so i went around and check in places and even bid for a few on NEA exercises but close a couple of times, didnt get though
i also have a few friends who are old timer hawkers, what ppl bid is just the pure rental, theres table cleaning fee, conservancy fee, utilities and other operating cost, not so simple de... u know u cant even use your own gas supplier?
end of the day its all abt the money, gov wanna ensure hawkers remain open and not like u say, suka suka close... hence nowadays no more old scheme where hawkers were given a choice to purchase the stall
that place weekday weekend also full. morning till noon.
the lou mai gai siew mai shop is good but need to be early.
beef noodle no need say q till dono where. sometime before 11 sold out

sad for the other hawkers there who open regular hours cos they want to make a living. but cos some stalls there open irregularly some people avoid going there. end up the hawker centre can look quiet.

yeah you are right. i don't know why no one in the gov has looked into this. this only keeps the cost high.
to me, one of the high waste stat board/gov body is the National Gallery.
so many staff with CEO, COO... for a building that not many visitors go to and not bringing in tourist dollars. they also never meet their KPIs. and still send their staff to overseas museums in venice as a form of learning/educational tour.
all on tax payers' monies.
why can't we combine all these non-profit generating museums under the same board and staff? at least National Museum and Asian Civilisation Museum have a clear purpose. No one knows what the national gallery is for.

I think the board of dir also mostly arty heads from museums/ & scholarly ppl / academics
that is good to know. but i think the staff are seperate. they sld combine national gallery with the singapore arts museum and make it one. really too useless none GDP churning entities that also serve no little purpose to singaporeans. i reckon can save a lot of money with lesser staff.

wasted. that hawker got potential to be good cos of those parking lots just beside. and yeah it is the only day and night place there. also, more BTOs are coming up there. business sld improve. got new condos there too.
yup, many are return despite only getting them recently... the table cleaning fee there is nearly $500, plus conservative and the rental, just these 3 items how much liao
parking lots suck actually cos very limited parking, those few pathetic lots only, lol

Wow 500 for table cleaning?? Include dishwashers too? Don't think they are paid well. Guess most of it goes to middlemen contractors.

lol i guess most ppl dunno, hence jump onto the pit thinking its damn ho tan... u know hawkers arent even allowed to use disposable utensils?
dun include washing hor, just "table cleaning" despite cleaners not going around cleaning tables and customers having to return trays...
Quote from: daryl76 on Mar 19, 2024, 12:25 PMu talking abt 89 which is opposite the community centre??? that one predominantly morning crowd only
if its 79/79A den those ppl actually deserve it, i took part in several bidding exercises there... the prices there had gone crazy liao
if its 80 den the stalls quite limited, and its another morning crowd place
actually last time i feel circuit road is shit. but after MRT came up + paya lebar etc, and other rejuvenation projects....... yea it's getting good.
cant get a decent flat there also. not 1m but soon to be liao

trust me there's still some parts which are shit... but definitely better than last time lol
theres even mansionettes there but some parts only, the new flats confirm make it nicer liao, plus condo some more
not cheap like u say though
I think the few BTO projects just beside MacPherson MRT are ready for TOP, all the hoardings already removed.
Got one recently cleared plot of land near Mattar MRT also slated for BTOs I think. And still got more plots of land.
Matter of time only this place becomes huat in terms of people and prices i think.
Too close to the city to let it go to waste. Gov surely milk this place gao gao.
Got some still building. Think late 25 or 26 then finish bah. I think is ok area but going to be super crowded

as usual, gov just wanna squeeze without a care if infrastructure can handle... no doubt theres 3 entry point to the estate but its gonna be super crowded cos there only 2 lane roads

going to widen the road there soon. think BTO and maybe a small two-three storey retail mall or intergrated with a condo.
