In 1944, it was a very different story already.

The Japanese were already losing.  Yes, the army was still unbeaten as the defeats were in the pacific but it also affects logistics for them and also the opponent. 

The British were growing stronger by then and it wasn't as easy as before.  The defeats in the pacific also meant that the Japanese navy wasn't really around to assist in the attack on India unlike in 1942 when the Japanese fleet roamed the Indian Ocean and there were actual fears that they could link up with the Germans in the Suez Canal



If the Japanese had attacked in 1942, it might have been different but the Japanese also didn't have the logistics
