S'pore woman posts on LinkedIn about running into ex-CEO Piyush Gupta in Bali, real Piyush Gupta says it's not him

A Singapore woman posted on LinkedIn about her chance encounter with a man she ran into in Bali.

Her post indicated that she was sure she had met former DBS CEO Piyush Gupta.

"I glanced across the room and thought, that looks an awful lot like Piyush. Curious, I walked over — and sure enough, it was him," wrote LinkedIn user Janney Hujic in a May 19 post.

She even included a photo of herself with the man himself, apparently in full retirement mode in a floral-printed shirt.

"No entourage. No airs. Just quiet conviction," she said.

As it turned out, there was a reason for his lack of an entourage.

"Sorry to disillusion you. That isn't me!" the former DBS CEO replied in a comment, a day after being tagged in Hujic's post.

His reply got over 2,000 likes — more than the initial post itself.

Hujic took it in stride, replying that the man "had your charms right on and said all the right things".

Doppelganger?
The mix-up apparently happened when Hujic saw Gupta's lookalike in a Bali cafe.

They spoke for a few minutes, during which Hujic shared about her travel start-up.

"His eyes lit up. He spoke of the need for rest and renewal... Over his 40+ year career, he's seen how these experiences fuel women's personal and professional growth," Hujic recalled.

She was also struck by his "humility and presence", she said.

For comparison, this is the real Piyush Gupta:

Mistaken identity
People in the comments section seemed divided on the case of mistaken identity.

Some accused Hujic of creating the posts for traffic.

"They look nothing alike!" one user said.

But others sympathised with the mix-up, with one noting that "the similarity is impeccable".

After screenshots of the post gained traction on social media, many commented that this was "peak LinkedIn", which refers to the phenomenon where professionals incessantly use the platform to share learning points.

Mothership has reached out to Hujic for comment.

S'porean man, 58, tagged as ex-CEO Piyush Gupta on LinkedIn, denounces woman's post
He told her he wasn't Piyush Gupta, but she still posted his photo.

A Singaporean man, who took a photo with a woman in Bali, which she then shared on LinkedIn and tagged former DBS CEO Piyush Gupta in it, has denounced the accusations that he intentionally misled the woman into thinking he was someone he was not.

In response to Mothership's queries, Kumar H Subramaniam, who is the man in the photo, also said he told the woman that he was not Gupta, and she even acknowledged it on the spot, but she still went ahead with her post.

What happened
The 58-year-old man discovered he was involved in an online "storm in a teacup" after the woman and LinkedIn user Janney Hujic wrote on LinkedIn on May 19: "I glanced across the room and thought, that looks an awful lot like Piyush. Curious, I walked over — and sure enough, it was him."

The post tagged Gupta.

The post and Gupta's comment were then widely circulated online, with many deriding this phenomenon of crafting vacuous LinkedIn learning points, and finally getting it awkwardly wrong, as "peak LinkedIn".

A request for comment sent to Hujic to clarify what had happened has since gone unanswered.

It is not known if she made a genuine mistake, if it was a prank, or a case of miscommunication.

After the post went international, a social media update supposedly by Hujic said she was taking a five-day hiatus from reading comments posted online.

Clarified he never said he was Gupta
Kumar denounced the woman's antics.

He did so by first going online to provide his side of the story.

Recounting what happened that day, Kumar said he was having lunch with a colleague at a cafe in Bali.

He was then approached by Hujic and a man who was with her.

Kumar was asked if he was Gupta, while being shown a photo of the former head of Southeast Asia's biggest bank.

He clarified that he was not, and even said this mistake has been made a few times in the past.

He then obliged to have his photo taken with the woman after she asked him if it was okay to do so.

Kumar said: "She and her guy mentioned that they had worked at DBS before and we joked about her pranking her friends that she had bumped into Mr Gupta by chance in public while on their holiday here."

"I never, at any point, said that I was indeed Mr Gupta," he added. "I never agreed for my picture to be used to promote any business or social ventures on anyone."

He added: "I do not condone any such actions of using any resemblance intentional or otherwise to mislead anyone, most importantly Mr Gupta."

In Indonesia last 25 years
Responding to queries from Mothership, Kumar said he has been in Indonesia for about 25 years and works in Bali as a teacher.

He said he is a "regular Joe" and is part of a network of working expatriates there who all know one another.

When pressed if he indeed told the woman at the time that he was not Gupta, Kumar said his colleague at lunch, who witnessed the encounter, can vouch for him.

"It seems to many that I led her on, but I have no reason nor desire to be exposed to her project in this manner as a third person with a public reputation is involved," Kumar said.

He added: "Some have said I may have taken advantage and tried to bed her. I was not and she was with her partner or husband."

He also rejected the claim that he only went public after the real Piyush Gupta commented on the woman's LinkedIn post.

Kumar said he has no idea why she still posted it, despite being told he was not Gupta.

He added that he did get a contact number provided by the woman's partner at the time, but he refuses to call them to seek clarification regarding why she even put up her post saying she had met Gupta when she had not.

He said: "Why should I call them when I am not in the wrong? They should be the one to contact me."

Inherent racism
Kumar also said he was subjected to racist comments in the wake of Hujic's post going viral.

"If you read the comments, they reference scam centres, mention all Indian men are the same, use the "K" word, which is repulsive to Mr Gupta and my reputation," he said.

He added: "This is racism at work. Bald Indian men with glasses look like one another?"

He also said he has been mistaken for Gupta at least twice before, but on each occasion, he just laughed it off.

Asked if he intends to do anything about Hujic's post, Kumar said he has no intentions of doing anything about it.

"Some have asked me to sue, but this is an online storm in a teacup," he said. "We all know the news cycle: In another week's time, another topic will come up and this will blow over."

However, he said this incident has once again alarmed him as racism has reared its ugly head.

He said: "One reason I left Singapore was because of the racism, where people will say 'Serangoon smells bad'. Now, 25 years later, I am still getting trolled online by such comments."

Having become unwittingly embroiled in this brouhaha, does he have anything to say to people who made assumptions about him?

He said: "I just want to take a stand against stereotyping people and making offensive remarks."

He also offered to share the location of the cafe where his photo was taken, provided the owner of the establishment is okay with it, he said.

He added: "If you ever come to Bali and see me, you can say 'Hi'."
