First-year high school student, Tsumugu Fujikawa, had vowed to put her introverted, bookworm image behind her, and make a fresh new start at Sakuragawa High. Falling back on old habits, however, Tsumugu instead spends lunch alone in the school library one day, and decides to once again find solace in books. She grabs an old album, which contains photos of former graduates of Sakuragawa, who appear to have lived an entire century before her.

A dark and dusty photograph slips out from one of the album pages, but by the time Tsumugu notices it, a massive earthquake suddenly erupts. Bookshelves quickly come crashing down towards Tsumugu, eventually taking her, and the world she always knew, along with them. Somehow, Tsumugu awakens and is almost completely unscathed by the incident, only to instead see everything around her transformed - trolley cars now flood the streets, and the townspeople are seen going about wearing both traditional Japanese and Edwardian Era clothing.
