Every person's story begins with a loved one, said People's Action Party (PAP) new face Jeffrey Siow.

"For me, that story begins with my father."

Speaking at the launch of the PAP manifesto on Apr. 17, the candidate recalled how his father worked in a coffeeshop all his life, from 3pm to 3am every day.

"I didn't see him much as a child. I wish I knew him better," he said, adding that he was still "grateful that he was working hard to provide for the family".

Fortunately, they were able to reconnect later in life, when he'd accompany his aged father to medical appointments.

These moments, he said, shaped how he felt about service.

"Because when we speak about policies and programmes, we are not just building a better system.

"We are creating the foundation for these quiet and powerful human desires to be fulfilled.

The peace of mind that comes when services are nearby, the assurance that we are able to provide for those we love, the joy of an extra hour with our children."

Relating to struggles
The former second permanent secretary at the Ministry of Manpower and the Ministry of Trade and Industry said that in his time at the civil service, he heard the struggles of Singaporeans.

"Cost of living, career stability, caring for children and elderly parents, making long term plans in a world that keeps shifting beneath our feet."

"These are not abstract concerns. These are lived realities."

As Singapore's challenges continue to grow, the PAP's purpose remains the same: To secure a future where "every Singaporean matters", Siow said.

This is even as political parties around the world "are retreating into echo chambers, serving only those who already agree with them, and deepening the very divides that they should be bridging".

"Singapore must choose a different path," he said.

"The PAP social compact to Singaporeans is that we will bridge differences, no matter how deep, and keep our people united."

He also addressed his PAP colleagues, urging them to "continue the quiet and steady work to broaden our tent, and show through our words, our actions, and our hearts, that every Singaporean has a seat at the table".

Background info
Siow previously served as the Principal Private Secretary (PPS) to then-Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong from 2017 to 2021.

He resigned from the civil service on Apr. 1, and was later spotted with the PAP team at Choa Chu Kang with fellow new face Choo Pei Ling.

In his speech closer to the end of the manifesto launch event, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong quipped that it would not be Siow's first time in an election, as he ran for the Students' Council while in junior college.

At the time, he'd won, PM Wong said. "I hope residents in Choa Chu Kang will strongly support him this time!"
