NRIC should not be treated as sensitive unique identifiers: MDDI

Acra's data policy states that the statutory board is exempted from the Personal Data Protection Act. PHOTO: BT FILE
NATIONAL Registration Identity Card (NRIC) numbers should not be treated as sensitive information, and instead be viewed as full names currently are, a Ministry of Digital Development and Information (MDDI) spokesperson said on Saturday (Dec 14).

"As a unique identifier, the NRIC number is assumed to be known, just as our real names are known.

"There should therefore not be any sensitivity in having one's full NRIC number made public, in the same way that we routinely share and reveal our full names to others," the spokesperson said.

The response comes after public concern over the availability of full NRIC numbers of citizens on the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority's (Acra) Bizfile online portal. The portal is used for business registrations and filings.

The MDDI spokesperson added that NRIC numbers can be misused when organisations rely on them as a form of authentication to access information or perform transactions.

"But just as our names alone would not be suitable as the basis for such authentication, neither should the NRIC number be used for this purpose," the spokesperson said.

Agree to disagree. NRIC reveals a person's age. It can also reveal information like whether the person is a new citizen. Organizations mostly still use nric and full name to verify users, especially phone authentication and legacy authentication methods. If govt don't take initiative, expect private organizations to take their own sweet time to make the changes. If nric not sensitive, then pdpa failed at their jobs. Mask nric for fk?

I wonder what is considered sensitive info then. Is residential info and phone number going to be made public too? Just as last time yellow pages also show this 2 info

Can abolish PDPA and make doxing legal too

Ah maybe networth sensitive info!!

NRIC where got so easy to know?

I dun even know my parents and frens NRIC despite knowing them all my life!

Even if they let me know the last 3 digits and letter of their NRIC, I doubt I will be able to guess their full NRIC

Now everything and anything can be changed at a whims notice to suit the govt's narrative. One day pdpa, another day exempted from pdpa, just like playing a game of cards. Thank you 61-70% for giving the pap godlike powers.

Rast time don't have the technology and foreign influx so yellow pages and phone directory was safe. Not easy for foreign scammers to access. The difference now is scammers can just scrape the data via bizfile people search(since it's public on the web. No login needed.)
Seems like scammers know us better than our closed ones. :frown:
