Guy making deliveries in Yishun sees elderly man on 10th-storey ledge, helps rescue him with a resident

Mr Chua Lee Koon was making deliveries at Yishun Ring Road on Sept 5 when he spotted an elderly man sitting on the 10th floor ledge of an HDB block.

Mr Chua immediately shouted for the man to come down to safety to no avail and so he called the police.

Mr Saride Venkata Kasi Viswanadh, who was in his flat when he heard Mr Chua shouting for help, went out to find out what was happening and saw the man on the ledge at another block.

Mr Venkata Kasi went to the block and tried to persuade the man to come down from the ledge.

When the police arrived, Mr Chua and Mr Venkata Kasi assisted in safely bringing the man back into the building.

For their actions, Mr Chua and Mr Venkata Kasi were presented with the Public Spiritedness Award by Woodlands Police Division on Sept 18.

The commander of Woodlands Police Division, Assistant Commissioner of Police Ang Eng Seng, said, "Both Mr Chua and Mr Venkata Kasi played an important role in the rescue effort and their selflessness and public-spiritedness are commendable.

"Their actions are an example of how members of the public can step forward to assist the police. We hope that their act will serve to inspire others to keep the community safe."
