I only wrote to cousins during school long vacation
And
One pen pal was a msia wrote 3 letter
And some teacher who left school wrote 3-10 letters

In sec school got one laoshi wrote w me for all 2x yr

When he wanted to come to Singapore it took 2 years to plan cos every reply was by post so if in jan he wrote he wanna come over, I would read the reply and post back to him and he would likely read it in Feb and he will reply and I will read in march and so on

When he wanted to come to Singapore it took 2 years to plan cos every reply was by post so if in jan he wrote he wanna come over, I would read the reply and post back to him and he would likely read it in Feb and he will reply and I will read in march and so on

When he came to Singapore it was really stressful.  Cos he did not tell me the flight number but the time and date of arrival and where he is taking off from.  So I had to piece this data and guess which flight and terminal.  It's not like I can confirm with him when he is boarding cos he has no phone.  No point mailing him also.

I stood there with a sign bearing his name and address and he did turn up.

I then asked him how come he booked a very expensive hotel (he told me the hotel name and address in one of the letters) but when I called the HOTEL there was no booking under his name.  Turned out he got the name of the HOSTEL from lonely planet and thought of staying there but never booked cos he thought they allowed walk ins.  Turned out that HOTEL was a relatively new one cos the new owner bought over the HOSTEL 5 YEARS AGO and changed it to a HOTEL. 

Now, you might be asking, how come he didn't know that?  Two reasons.  First, it turned out he got the hostel name from the lonely planet guidebook from his library which was out of date (who would have guessed a lonely planet guidebook could be out of date 😂).  Secondly and more importantly, he couldn't confirm with the hostel/hotel cos he has no phone or internet access.  Remember?  All our communication was via snail mail.

End up I drove him to Chinatown, parked there and then we walked the streets looking for hostels.  We walked from one hostel to another and found one with a bed available in the third hostel.

He paid in cash cos again, he has no internet access which also means he has no credit card.

Heng I only got one such friend.  Imagine if I got two or twenty such friends today

There is potentially a part two.  He invited me to his place.  He told me just write to him and when I would arrive at the train station (it's about 50km north of london) and he will wait for me there.  And if he is not there, just walk to his place cos he stays nearby and I have his address.

All I need to do is knock on his door and tell whoever answers the door I am xxx, friend of this guy from Singapore and I will be let in.

I admit I am chicken.  I have not gone to visit him yet
