Ya had the same experience with a CECA family in an mrt as well. Gave up my seat for the family (has a baby), not even an acknowledgement, nevermind a thank you. Best part after sit liao the CECA father still ask the next person to also give up seat so that he (not his wife + baby who took my seat), can sit next to them.

i think tiongs are improving as the country gets wealthier and people start to be more modernised and travel. greater exposure to the world. their gov is making a push for them to be more civilised too.
i was in china last month and they are generally more civilised now. less spitting and smoking. and got constant reminders on their trains for people to be considerate and not to blast their phones on loudspeakers. and there were people who actually hold the door for me.
but still need time as the country is so big and still many poor and older folks who are stuck in their ways and do not travel. but it is a vast improvement. i think another 10-20 years they will be quite on par with most countries in terms of social behaviour.
