What I feel is Apple felt it's not worth making at this point, esp with competition from so many other EVs
at some point,a company needs to r&d and decide if it's worth to pursue
building EV is like starting a new planet and incorporating it into their ecology (the galaxy or universe)
ya and as some people said, the material and time building a phone rakes in more profit than EVs

Last month, Apple called it quits on its electric-vehicle dream. This month, one of the iPhone maker's biggest rivals in China is showing it how it's done.
The Beijing-based smartphone maker Xiaomi is set to do what Apple could not after it announced plans to start selling its first line of EVs, the Speed Ultra 7 — known as the SU7 — on March 28 in nearly 30 cities across China.

Not defending Apple but I think they are quite a perfectionist coy hence the 10 yrs before ultimately pulling the plug
