Title: What is considered beating the red light?
Post by: Philipkee on Sep 28, 2024, 03:07 PM
If you have crossed the first set of lights at a junction and the lights turned red before you completed the crossing, should you stop before the second set of lights at the other end of the junction or just proceed?

For context, I am referring to the junction of woodlands ave 12 to SLE in the direction of BKE.  Cars turn right from woodlands ave 12 to SLE up the filter lane

I notice sometimes some car will breakdown on the filter lane and cars turning right have to stop in between the first set of lights and the second set of lights as they try to wiggle past the broken down vehicle.  Then the lights turn red, which means the green man will come on.

Some cars will still proceed (if there are no pedestrians) cos they are already mid junction.  Some cars will just stop which means their boots will now go beyond the boundary of the yellow box and obstruct vehicles exiting the SLE to woodlands ave 12.

So who is right?  Those who proceeded or those who stopped?

I remember BTT say once you cross the first set of traffic lights you cross the second set as well and not stop in the middle of the junction

The red circle.  If you happen to cross the junction but you are stopped temporarily in the red circle and the lights turn red, can you proceed to complete the crossing?

It feels weird to continue cos it's like beating the red light but if you don't complete, you obstruct oncoming traffic to an extent and you are supposed to complete the crossing.  We don't stop in the middle of T junctions or square junctions just because the lights change mid junction.

I think they shd retake their theory and tp should cover it in theory when they should not stop
Example case is this one
If stop more accidents and more risk

No.  This junction is like a two way junction.

Woodlands ave 12, you curve right to go up SLE in direction of BKE

Coming from SLE, you come down the slope and curve right to go to Woodlands Ave 12

A top down view of the junction

The arrows are the only two directions traffic can go and because they intersect, only one side can go at any one time so there is no arrow or anything.  Just green light or red light

I think some people think this can be considered as an "island".  Similar example exist in Bukit Merah.  Turning right from CMPB to mt Faber Safra junction

Need to see the whole picture to understand the traffic
cars from where. If from behind then they should stop outside yellow box.
