After work, a full-time national service police officer Farhat, 21, approached a female prostitute and flashed his police ID to imply that she should provide him free sexual services.
He was charged with two counts of violating the Prevention of Corruption Act, alleging that he attempted to solicit sexual bribes from three prostitutes.
He was sentenced to a youth correctional institution for at least 6 months after admitting to one of the crimes. However, he was dissatisfied with the sentence and appealed to the High Court.
At the time of the incident, he was attached to the Orchard Neighborhood Police Post and was off duty at the time of the crime. He has since completed his national service on January 4 this year.
The defence lawyer pointed out that the defendant has great potential for rehabilitation and hoped that the judge would consider probation supervision.
However, the prosecution argued that the defendant used his police ID to attempt to solicit sexual bribes twice within a span of four days, damaging the reputation of law enforcement officers and committing a serious crime. Therefore, it still believes that it is more appropriate for the defendent to enter a youth reformatory, for at least 6 months.
The High Court judge ultimately changed his sentence to seven days in prison.
