Title: Should I continue my CPA Australia studies ?
Post by: Risa on Jun 18, 2024, 07:47 AM
I have completed 3 modules, left 3 more to go.

However, I am having some issues trying to fulfill the 3-year practical working experience requirement.

Last year, I contacted CPA Australia and they provided me with a solution: I do not need my actual exact supervisor who is a CA/CPA to sign off my working experience. Meaning to say, any CA/CPA can sign off for me as long as they are satisfied with my working experience. (iirc, ACCA also allows this but not CA SG).

Recently, I managed to get in touch with an ex-manager who we worked for few months only and he was ok to sign for that few months. Better than nothing.

Currently I am still left with around 30 months of experience that needs to get signed off but I am running short of people to ask. In general, most of them that I asked are not willing or comfortable to sign.

My current workplace, during the interview they said they can support and sign off for me. But it turns out none of them are qualified to do so as they are neither CA nor CPA. This issue has been one of the stronger reasons why I want to change job.

Given that $ has been invested into this, I dont want to see the $ go down the drain. However, I am also stuck with a requirement which I struggle to fulfill.

Besides, from time to time I do think about if I want to continue this accounting field as well.

Based on the time frame, latest by May 2027 I have to complete the entire CPA programme.

What would you do if you were me ?

so from now till May 2027, u can have another 12 mths?

u got contact CPA Australia to tell them your situation and whether can extend?

better to join the big 4 or the smaller but more renowned ones?

Meaning to say still need a CA/CPA to sign for you as long as they are satisfied with your working exp? Do you need this CA/CPA to have worked with you?

If not maybe can find someone who is a CA/CPA to help certify? If yes maybe can ask around or I can try to help to find

Now still early but will contact CPA Australia again if by 2027 I still cant complete the programme.

No audit for me. Cant sustain the hours.

The CA/CPA no need to work with me before.

i only degree.

and yes you are right, should just study acca in the first place.

i got fooled by govt narratives back then when they announced new autonomous uni SIT and SUSS as the 5th and 6th unis.

so i always tell people...dont touch whatever the govt is pushing for or stirring hypes...

See yr age lo.

Having cpa but not having the age and relevant experience, people also look at u with doubt.

Cpa I presume certified public accountant right? Can sign off bs financial statement one right.

My ex colleague is fc using his cpa qualifications. But cannot promote further to be bc, sianz cos not enough relevant experiences.

I dunno anything about studying thou.

But think cpa without relevant working experience and age, I will still doubt u alot. Cos last I had those McKinsey clown come got 1 fella non stop talking about improving business practices for our agong but his cpa title put big big name card. Knn i kana swan have to put my psle title btc aka bo tak cheh

R u willing to restart a fresh in sthg diff ?

If sthg diff in fresh field pays not as well in first 3-6 yrs are u ok / able to tank that ?
( that s a 3-6 years loss of usual earning power as a experienced accounting professional)

If u ok with it , go n do those personality test n find out what skills, knowledge, experience & interests n passions u have that can be used in the fields that gel with yr personality
I used this free test
https://www.16personalities.com/free-personality-test Then got free go library to read more

Once u roughly hv idea , go sign up

My fren went for one of these

She didn't change role but she worked in 1-2 jobs 10 yr ish each n had to relearn how to find a job / how to write resume etc

After +-2 months she found a job in same field she liked , pay better than earlier job which was toxic n demoralising ...

but clubbie if u rly want to change right, change fast

i feel maybe current field not suited for u in some sense. but as bsg pointed out not everyone is going to be the best in the job they do

u go think about it, sit down, talk to some people, write down your thoughts and recalibrate

say now u reskill as nurse.......... example. will u be happier? i dont think so because u are competitive deep down inside and unhappy with your lot and u nv want to become a nurse

even tho nurses pay is not that low but it's definitely not high and u already stand to lose the years of experience

if not nurse then what? u nv ever said u wanted to start biz. then mid career can change what path?

keep on trying for govt bah

if not, find something that is your passion and it will be better and it could be outside of work. say u rly hate ur job but u can do it ok and it pays well, but u like hiking or playing badminton or like to help others - meaning ur passion or hobby lies outside of work

otherwise if u are determined to stick to this same route, u need to reframe ur mind and set on a new direction

and know it's a long hard road ahead and u may not become what u envision, whatever senior manager director or partner and make hundreds of thousands or more

u must think whether u can do this down the road say 20 yrs from now

meanwhile just jiayou and do your best

got any other career couselling other than govt-driven  (https://www.life.gov.sg/guides/support-for-your-job-search/get-career-advice-and-coaching)ones ?

main ones/mostly subsidised are gov ones. my fren attended a few session w gov. WSQ /
careersfuture  (https://www.wsg.gov.sg/home/individuals/career-advisory-coaching)/
e2i ntuc (https://www.ntuc.org.sg/uportal/programmes/career-coaching) / driven ones during her job search

i think there are 2 other alternatives
1. school /college career centres .eg. career centres at your univ. can approach them cos they are alws in touch w employers to get placements for interns n
they are regularly seeking alumni to come back n be in touch w school for a symbiotic rs

e.g. https://www.singaporetech.edu.sg/life-at-sit/get-career-ready/career-coaching

https://www.careertracks.edu.sg/coaches-consultants-and-internship-teams/meet-your-career-coaches/

2. private ones (but i believe these are some of the providers also providing training to gov counsellors)
some i found online
https://hrguru.com.sg/services/career-counselling/

https://www.singsaver.com.sg/blog/career-coaching-in-singapore

    industry oriented ones
example
https://www.ibf.org.sg/home/career-advisory/about-careers-connect/for-individuals

personal thoughts :
since career counselling is mainly a notForProfit thing i would trust gov funded / gov initiatives more than i would try pte ones

If I feel v down n demoralised
I ll just go for easiest job that I can do without much heart or spirit Eg for my field I might go for  xxxx in a support role in same field : imptly without strategy foresight vision needed ; without key decision responsibilities ; without things that can cause other ppl major trouble by me bringing 50% effort to work

N rest of 50% I ll just use on myself n my wellbeing

50% rest of it : go n spend time n energy n attn on things that u don't know u like or not but don't need so much effort or motivation to do
Eg learning about your collections ?
Watching movies ?
Learning a foreign language or play a new instrument
Or do painting or do calligraphy or do self taught craft or cook something u like .. basically stuff u can learn or anyhow do on yr own if u like

U r yr own most valuable asset
